McLeish backs John Souttar amid 'devastating' Rangers claim

John Souttar has the mentality to make his Rangers career a success.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s start to life at Ibrox.

Souttar, 25, was criticised for failing to stop Jon Nouble from opening the scoring in Saturday’s (31 July) 2-1 win over Livingston.

He was then completely dropped from the matchday squad that travelled to Belgium to face Union-Saint Galloise on Tuesday (2 August).

Connor Goldson came out and defended his new centre-back partner while speaking to Sky Sports (1 August).

McLeish insists Souttar has what it takes to bounce back.

“I was responsible for giving the player his debut for Scotland and he was sent off in a game against Israel for two bookings,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“He’s a young guy, he is still young. He still doesn’t have every answer to every question but he will know what is required at Rangers.

“That’s what happens at Rangers, one game and everyone writes you off. He’s a passer of the ball and a decent stalwart defender, he played well against Rangers in last year’s final.

“Defenders, when they make a mistake, it leads to something devastating, like a goal to the opposition.

“You don’t often get away with mistakes so he has to have the mentality to play for Rangers and I think he has that.”

Rangers are next in action against Kilmarnock on Saturday (6 August).

They will then attempt to overturn a two-goal deficit against USG on Tuesday (9 August).
