McLeish: Baldock tipped to dazzle at Celtic as major bid lined up

Alex McLeish has suggested right-back George Baldock could thrive at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Rangers and Scotland manager claimed the Parkhead faithful would expect top performances from the Premier League star.

The Daily Record reported on 27 June Baldock is high on Ange Postecoglou’s list of full-back targets.

The Sheffield Star reported yesterday (1 July) that the Hoops are prepared to pay between £5-8million for the 28-year-old.

Celtic sold Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen in January and signed Jonjo Kenny on loan from Everton to replace him.

Kenny has returned to Goodison Park and therefore Postecoglou needs to fill the position before their Champions League qualifier with FC Midtjylland on 20 July.

“Celtic fans will be looking for the big names,” McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“Ok, George has been a tried and tested Premier League player for the last couple of years with Sheffield United and got promotion the year before.

“The Celtic fans will still be expecting really high levels of quality from George.

“If he’s fallen down the pecking order at Sheffield United does he qualify for a starting place in the Celtic team? Ok, he may feel it’s a lower level than where he’s been playing at and he’ll cope no bother at all. The possibilities are that are true.”

Baldock played 70 times in the Premier League for the Blades before they were relegated last season.

The Englishman did not miss a minute of the 2019-20 league campaign as Chris Wilder’s side secured an impressive ninth-place finish.

In other news, a three-time title winner has told the Celtic board he’s keen on the director of football role.
