McLeish: Borna Barisic's Rangers career may be over after 'cracking' deal agreed

Borna Barisic’s Rangers career may be over after the arrival of Ridvan Yilmaz.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Gers’ latest signing.

On Monday (25 July), Rangers confirmed the signing of Yilmaz, 21, on a five-year deal from Besiktas.

Sky Sports reported (25 July) the fee for Yilmaz was around £3.4million, rising to £5m with add-ons.

On 10 June, Football Scotland reported that Turkish side Trabzonspor have registered their interest in signing Barisic.

McLeish admits Barisic was “usurped” last season and claims his Gers career may have “run the line”.

“Borna has had a good couple of seasons but last season he got usurped a little bit,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“It seemed to be that maybe his Rangers career has run the line. I don’t know what exactly is going to happen but it seems there is a cracking new prospect at left-back.

“We are seeing Giovanni putting his stamp on things. He has been there a year, he inherited Gerrard’s team and has persevered with most of them.

“Now he has been through the black book he has with staff, we will see that starting to filter through to the Rangers squad.”

Barisic, 29, made 43 appearances for the Gers during the 2021-22 season.

He failed to score in that campaign and lost his position to the now-departed Calvin Bassey towards the end of the campaign.
