McLeish: Celtic may be able to seal 'Larsson-type' signing amid Sky update
Alex McLeish has claimed Celtic could pull off a “coup” by signing Georgios Giakoumakis from VVV Venlo.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager suggested the Hoops hope the 26-year-old can be a “Henrik Larsson-type” capture.
As reported by Sky Sports, Celtic have made an approach to sign Giakoumakis, who is valued at £3million by Venlo.
The report states the Greece international is weighing up a move to Parkhead or German second-tier side Werder Bremen.
Despite Venlo being relegated, Giakoumakis was the Eredivisie’s top scorer last season with 26 goals in 30 appearances.
McLeish suggested some of the top Dutch sides would be interested in his capture.

As such, he claimed the six-cap hitman could be a “special signing” for the Bhoys.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Celtic will be looking for some sort of coup and bringing in a Henrik Larsson-type character. Someone who came in and blew them away.
“I guess that’s why they’re looking at different countries. In Holland and Belgium, you tend to get good value for money if you’re looking at bringing players in.
“The English Premier League’s far too rich, as are some of the countries in Europe.
“He’s scored a lot of goals for Venlo and you would imagine that the Dutch top teams will be looking at that as well.
“If Celtic can get him ahead of those, it could be one of those special signings. Relegated and getting 26 goals? That is absolutely unheard of.”
Larsson scored 242 goals in 313 appearances over a seven-year spell at Celtic.
