McLeish issues Alfredo Morelos transfer claim after Sky's Rangers update

Speculation over Alfredo Morelos’ Rangers future will continue to mount until he signs a new contract.

That’s according to former Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about an update on the striker’s future.

Sky Sports reported (25 July) that Giovanni van Bronckhorst is “very positive” about Morelos, 26, signing a new deal at Ibrox.

The Colombian international has entered the final year of his contract.

He missed the final weeks of the Gers’ 2021-22 campaign after suffering a thigh injury.

McLeish insists it is looking more and more likely that Morelos will remain at Rangers after a lack of speculation in the weeks after his injury.

“It’s gone pretty quiet on Morelos over the last few months,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“He got injured and missed the end of the season, now all of the transfer talk has disappeared and now it’s all about getting him back to top form and the fitness levels that are required.

“It certainly doesn’t look as though Morelos is on his way out. The longer that (contract) goes without a signature, the speculation increases even greater.

“It will be interesting to see if there is any business done in the coming weeks.”

Morelos remains injured and missed Rangers’ first game of the 2022-23 season against Livingston on Saturday (30 July).

Two goals in two second-half minutes from Scott Arfield and James Tavernier gave the Gers a 2-1 win after Livi took the lead inside the first five minutes.
