McLeish predicts 23-year-old to star in Celtic 'rebuild' after Taylor talks begin
Alex McLeish has claimed Ange Postecoglou should build the Celtic side around the likes of Greg Taylor amid reported contract talks.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted the 23-year-old needs to be part of the “foundations” at Parkhead.
As reported by the Daily Record (5th October), Celtic have opened talks over a new and improved deal for Taylor.
The left-back’s current terms are set to expire in the summer of 2023.
However, Celtic are reportedly keen to hand him a two or three-year extension and a pay rise.
He is currently out of action due to a shoulder injury that required surgery last month.
McLeish insisted Taylor delivers “above-average performances every week” for Celtic when fit.
As such, he suggested the defender should be a cornerstone of the side moving forward.
“It’s about building that squad, getting strong foundations,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Greg brings that kind of consistency. When you’ve got players who have great consistency, they give you at least a seven out of ten every week.
“Obviously you want them to be eights and nines, we rarely see a perfect player.
“But he is definitely one of the guys who brings above-average performances every game.
“That’s part of the foundations of the rebuilding.”
Taylor joined Celtic from Kilmarnock back in 2019.
He has played a total of 60 times across all competitions for the Bhoys to date.
Celtic have used the likes of Josip Juranovic and Adam Montgomery at left-back in Taylor’s absence.
In other news, McLeish makes “amazing” Celtic claim after what he’s heard from “pals at Aberdeen”.
