Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Tyler Roberts is under threat of the axe following Rodrigo’s return to the Leeds United squad, according to Alex McLeish.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers boss even suggested Marcelo Bielsa could replace the 22-year-old entirely this summer.

The Wales international has started Leeds’ last four league games – three of which ended in defeat – in the absence of the injured Rodrigo.

The Spanish forward returned against West Ham on Monday night, replacing Roberts on the hour mark.

The 30-year-old has played 19 times and scored three goals for Leeds since joining from Valencia last summer.

However, he missed six games due to a groin injury picked up against Crystal Palace in late January.

With the 25-cap Spain international back in contention, McLeish suggested Roberts’ time in the side – and possibly at Elland Road – could be limited.

Asked if Roberts was under threat of the axe, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, they certainly need the variety. If you can’t do what he wants you to do, he will get somebody who can.

“They can’t just do it in attack with one player or two players. They do need three or four players.

“I can see Bielsa, if Leeds finish the season in a situation without too much pressure – i.e. not down near the bottom – he can have other targets different to Roberts in his head that can make that club stronger.”

Roberts has made 16 appearances in the Premier League this season, six of which have come in the starting XI.

However, he is still waiting to score his first top-flight goal.
