McLeish 'surprised' by Celtic decision after Stephen Welsh footage emerges
Alex McLeish was “surprised” to see Stephen Welsh starting for Celtic in their league opener against Aberdeen on Sunday (31 July).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Rangers manager said Welsh appears to be “on the up” at Parkhead.
As shown on Sky Sports (31 July), the 22-year-old scored the opening goal for the Bhoys at the weekend.
The Hoops defeated Aberdeen 2-0 in their first game of the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership season.
Celtic winger Jota was also on the scoresheet.
According to Football Scotland (1 August), Celtic have rejected a loan bid from French Ligue 1 side Toulouse for Welsh.

The offer included an option to buy said to be worth around £3million.
Ange Postecoglou sees the centre-back as a key part of his squad this season.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Welsh’s performance against the Dons, McLeish said: “I didn’t see the goal but as soon as I heard Welsh scored I said it must have been a corner or a set piece.
“The more you play at that level and make one or two mistakes, you eradicate them from your game and you become better.
“It was a surprise for me to see Stephen Welsh playing given the Celtic defence. But he seems like a kid on the up.“
Welsh made 24 appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side across all competitions last season.
During those outings he scored two goals and provided one assist.
