McLeish wowed by Ralston transformation at Celtic and likens him to Rangers star man
Alex McLeish has been blown away by Anthony Ralston’s meteoric resurgence at Celtic this season.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 22-year-old had taken a leaf out of James Tavernier’s book at Rangers.
The right-back has scored in both of the Hoops’ league games this season and has played every minute across all competitions so far.
It has been a remarkable turnaround for a player who made just one appearance across all competitions last term.
McLeish admitted Ralston had brought a “new dimension” to Celtic with his attacking forays from right-back.
“He’s been a man possessed, hasn’t he?” McLeish told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge.

“When I was tuning into the results, I’m thinking: ‘There’s Ralston on the scoresheet again’. Maybe he’s taken a leaf out of James Tavernier’s book with the amount James scored last year.
“Ralston, he’ll obviously make an impression with that. As a manager, it’s: ‘Okay, I don’t care if he doesn’t score, he’s a brilliant defender.’
“But when they get a goal or two, it becomes a new dimension to the team. Also to the player and confidence-wise as well.
“The player will feel, every time he goes forward and gets the ball at his feet, he’s going to have a chance to score.
“That’s the kind of feelings that confident players have when they get that backing and they’re able to contribute to the team’s victory.”
Ralston’s only outing last term came in a 0-0 draw with Livingston in the Premiership.
He was left as an unused substitute for just 13 other league games.
