McManus: This Celtic player will be a global superstar

By Harry Sykes

Stephen McManus has insisted Kieran Tierney is destined to be a global superstar and hailed him as the current Celtic player who is set to go the furthest in the game.

The left-back has emerged from the Celtic ranks to establish himself as a key member of the first team and one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Tierney has been linked with a move to one of the Premier League big guns and former Hoops skipper McManus is convinced he has what it takes to become a world beater.

“When you see Kieran playing, he has absolutely everything,” McManus told the Scottish Daily Mail.

“And it seems that his best attribute is that he’s a really good type. He wants to get better and better every day.

“It is not easy coming through Celtic’s academy and getting the opportunity to play.

“For me he is the one, out of everybody, who can go the furthest in his career.”

Celtic are preparing for a pivotal Champions League qualification clash against FC Astanta, with the first leg to take place at Parkhead on Wednesday night.

McManus, who retired from playing this week at the age of 35 to take on a coaching role at Motherwell, believes the leading clubs will be keeping a close eye on Tierney and whether he can go toe to toe with the best wide attacking players in Europe.

Celtic fans still harbour hopes that the home-grown star will follow the path trodden by former captain Paul McStay, who knocked back offers from abroad to play his entire career in Glasgow.

McManus added to the Mail: “I think he has the potential to go wherever he wants. He’s that good.

“Big clubs will certainly come in – and it’s up to him to decide. I think just now the best place to keep developing is Celtic.

“He is working under a fantastic manager, a fantastic coaching staff, playing in the Champions League and winning titles. So Celtic is the best place for him to be just now.

“The last person I witnessed like him was John Kennedy. He was very similar in that he had everything, before his injury.

“Kieran just seems to be getting better and better – and I couldn’t compliment him enough.”
