Medical Tomorrow: Nick Pope agrees to join Newcastle United as signing day revealed - Sources

Nick Pope will undergo a Newcastle United medical on Wednesday (22 June) after agreeing the terms of a move from Burnley, Football Insider understands.

The north-east giants have had a bid for the goalkeeper accepted by Burnley.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Pope has been given permission to head to the club and complete the formalities of the transfer.

He is scheduled to undergo a medical on Wednesday and it is expected he will sign on Thursday (23 June).

The 30-year-old still has a year left on his Burnley contract but is set to end his six-year spell at Turf Moor following their relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2021-22 season.

He is expected to provide cover and competition for Martin Dubravka who ended the season as Eddie Howe’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow also had spells between the sticks under Steve Bruce at the beginning of the season.

Lancs Live reported last week (16 June) that Woodman is now close to a move to Preston North End which will become permanent when his Newcastle contract ends next summer.

Pope will become the first addition to the Newcastle squad of the summer.

They have converted Matt Targett’s loan move from Aston Villa into a permanent move after he enjoyed a fruitful second half of 2021-22 at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies lost just five times in the second half of the campaign after Christmas as they finished 11th in the Premier League.

In other news, a finance guru has cited a “£400million” Middle East agreement as Newcastle United eye a “landmark” deal.
