Charlton Athletic are in advanced talks to sign MK Dons midfielder Alex Gilbey, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 25-year-old is available on a free transfer this summer after his contract at Stadium MK expired last month.
A source at The Valley has told Football Insider that the player is completing his medical ahead of the move to the London club.
Talks are at an advanced stage and a deal could be finalised within the next 24 hours.
The Addicks are in need of central midfield players after Josh Cullen and Matt Smith returned to their parent clubs, West Ham and Manchester City, upon the expiration of their loan deals.
Gilbey last month became MK Dons’ Player of the Season Year for the second year running, a feat only club legend Luke Chadwick has matched.
His 37 appearances for Russell Martin’s side last season yielded five goals and two assists and one of those strikes earned him the Goal of the Season award – a wonderful solo effort against Gillingham.
A move to The Valley would bring to an end a three year association with The Dons which included promotion from League Two in the 2018/19 campaign.
The centre-midfielder rose up the youth ranks at Colchester United before a move to Wigan Athletic in 2016.
The Latics and Addicks suffered relegation from the Championship last month, so a move to Charlton would see Gilbey lining up against two of his former clubs next season.
The prospect of working under former Leeds United and Newcastle midfielder Lee Bowyer is no doubt an attractive proposition for Gilbey, who plays as a number eight.
Bowyer made nearly 400 Premier League appearances in his career and has been manager of Charlton since March 2018.
