Michael Kayode ‘lucky’ to avoid red card vs West Ham after Konstantinos Mavropanos challenge – Keith Hackett
Michael Kayode should have seen red for his challenge on West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos as the centre-back scored an own goal in their loss at Brentford.
Mavropanos poked the ball into his own net in the 15th minute of the Hammers’ 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Saturday.
The Greek defender was trying to clear off the goal-line under pressure from Bees star Kayode, who lunged in and initially claimed the goal as his own.
Replays showed that the Italy under-21 international caught Mavropanos on his shin with his studs, but referee Craig Pawson did not have a clear view of the incident and the goal was given.
Every match is huge for West Ham as they battle relegation, and they have now dropped into the relegation zone after the loss and Tottenham’s win at Aston Villa.

The opening goal had a huge impact on proceedings, with several other key incidents going against the Hammers as El Hadji Malick Diouf conceded a penalty and Tomas Soucek’s claims for a spot kick were waved away.
They can certainly feel hard done by, with former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett insisting that Kayode should have been sent off and the own goal should have been disallowed.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he said: “He’s lucky to survive a red card, for me. I think he clearly knows what he’s doing.
“I think he’s forgot about the ball and is really more intent on fouling the man.
“So I deem that as serious foul play, red card. He should have gone off. And at that point, the goal would have been disallowed.”
Supercomputer predicts West Ham’s chances of relegation after weekend results
West Ham’s first loss in four games has resulted in them dropping into the bottom three by one point, with a tough clash against league leaders Arsenal on the horizon next Sunday.
Fans will be fearing the worst after such a damaging defeat, with Opta‘s supercomputer now giving them a 76.77 per cent chance of relegation this season alongside Wolves and Burnley.
Being in the Championship would surely see numerous key players move on, with sources telling Football Insider that Jarrod Bowen could join Liverpool if they are relegated.
They are being backed to finish on 39 points, while Tottenham now have a 20.73 per cent chance of going down and are set to finish on 41 points, with Nottingham Forest and Leeds ahead of them.
