Michael Owen has claimed Liverpool are the “only threat” to Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Pep Guardiola’s City top the table after starting the campaign with a 100 per cent record, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have picked up ten points from their opening five games.

The Merseyside club have recorded victories away at Arsenal, and Chelsea, while they beat Premier League champions Leicester City 4-1 at home.

In contrast City have beaten neighbours Manchester United, including picking up victories against Sunderland, Stoke, West Ham and Bournemouth.

But former Reds striker Owen believes his former side are beginning to look the “real deal” ahead of their clash with Hull on Saturday afternoon and claimed Klopp’s side as they only threat to City in the title race.

“It is Mike Phelan’s 54th birthday on Saturday but I don’t think he will have any points to celebrate given Liverpool are beginning to look the real deal and the major/only threat to Manchester City in the title race,” Owen told the Bet Victor website.

Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City are the current Premier League champions after they shocked the world last season by lifting the Premier League crown.

The English champions are currently in 11th place with seven points, with City’s nearest challenges so far this season are Everton and Tottenham who have accumulated 13 and eleven points respectively.

London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are due to meet on Saturday evening, with both sides on ten points each.

In other Liverpool team news, Jamie Carragher has hinted on Twitter that Jurgen Klopp has axed this senior man for the Hull clash.
