Michael Owen predicts Liverpool v Everton

By Harvey Byrne

Michael Owen has backed former club Liverpool to come out as victors over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday evening.

The ex-Reds striker has predicted both teams to score with Liverpool coming out on top in a derby “to saviour”.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently sat in second following a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough in midweek.

Meanwhile, the Toffees put an end to a poor run of form against Arsenal on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over the third placed north London team.

Former England and Liverpool star Owen shared his thoughts on the crucial derby clash, stating that Belgium internationals Divock Origi and Romelu Lukaku could be key in the encounter.

“Everton suddenly sprung to live after a dismal first half-hour against Arsenal earlier in the week,” wrote Owen in his Bet Victor column.

“But I just feel Liverpool will take the points in, what promises to be, a Merseyside derby to savour.

“We highlighted the burgeoning talents of Divock Origi earlier in the week and I just wonder if the Belgium national manager, and former Blues boss, Roberto Martinez will be in attendance to see his young strikers Origi and Romelu Lukaku go head-to-head at Goodison.”

A win for Liverpool could move them within three points of league leaders Chelsea, depending on the Blues’ result against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

However, a defeat could see them topple down to fourth in their last fixture before Christmas.

By contrast, Everton in eighth could move up to seventh with a victory at Goodison Park, while a loss could see them fall down to 12th.

It will be a clash that both sets of supporters will be keen to win, while the Toffees will be looking to put an end to a run which hasn’t seen them pick up a victory in the fixture since 2010.
