Micky Quinn picks Newcastle quintet in Championship TOTS, 27-year-old overlooked

By Will Butcher

Micky Quinn has chosen five senior Newcastle stars in his Championship team of the season after the official side was announced by the EFL.

Quinn included captain Jamaal Lascelles, top scorer Dwight Gayle, midfielders Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey as well as manager Rafa Benitez in his side.

In a team that was posted on talkSPORT Breakfast Show host Alan Brazil’s official Twitter account, Quinn overlooked 27-year-old defender Ciaran Clark.

Toon icon Quinn picked his side after the SkyBet Championship Twitter account released their best eleven from the 2016-17 season on Monday, which included only two Newcastle stars.

The EFL announced the side on Twitter earlier this week, with only Shelvey and Gayle included in the side, while Huddersfield boss David Wagner was preferred to Benitez.

Currently sitting at the top of the table, Benitez has inspired the Toon to 24 wins from 38 league games as they sit a point above Brighton and seven beyond Wagner’s Terriers.

Quinn preferred Lascelles to Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, while Ritchie comes in for Huddersfield’s Australia international Aaron Mooy.

Ex-Newcastle striker Quinn also included reported target Tom Cairney from Fulham, with Benitez set to re-enter the market for the playmaker, according to the Daily Mail.

Newcastle will be hoping Quinn’s five chosen stars can combine once again after the international break, as they take on relegation threatened Wigan on April 1 at St. James’ Park.

In other Newcastle news, here is why this Toon star should have been named in the side.
