Mikel Arteta accused of lying to the press after Arsenal 'dressing room' reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted Mikel Arteta will have ripped into the Arsenal squad after the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham despite defending them in interviews.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 40-year-old was not “honest” when speaking to the media after Thursday’s derby day loss.

Speaking to Sky Sports (12 May), Arteta insisted he was “so proud” of the players and claimed the officials had “destroyed a beautiful game”.

He went on to reveal he told his players in the dressing room to focus on the Newcastle game on Monday night, with the Spurs game “history”.

However, Whelan suggested Arteta may not have been entirely truthful with his public comments.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “There will have been different words said to the players. I think he expected more from them on the night.

“When he reflects on it, looks back on the game, looks at the challenges and how Holding lost his composure, he’ll see how they they lost control of the game.

“Tottenham smelled blood. Arsenal just didn’t handle the London Derby and the emotions of it very well. That’s the be all and end all of it. Tottenham were just the better side, the more clinical side and the cuter side on the night.

“I don’t agree with anything Arteta said on Thursday night. This is maybe something he’ll learn from when he looks back on his press conference. He should have been a bit more honest and a bit more gracious about the defeat.

“When you’re angry off the back of a defeat against your rivals, sometimes you get these conferences wrong.”
