Danny Mills has claimed John McGinn should be in line to follow his star-studded teammates in landing a new Aston Villa contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs, the former England defender is in no doubt about the value of the central midfielder, 25, to Dean Smith’s side.
Villa confirmed last month that Tyrone Mings had followed Jack Grealish and Keinan Davis in signing a new long-term contract.
Mills believes that McGinn, who signed a five-year deal in August 2019, deserves to join his teammates in being rewarded with new and improved terms.
Asked by Football Insider if Villa should make it a priority to tie the Scotland international to a fresh long-term contract, Mills said:
“McGinn is a top-class player and if you do not reward players in this day and age and they get within two years of their contract they start thinking, ‘Maybe I am not wanted and I will walk away and leave.’
“He is undoubtedly a fantastic player and you have to tie down your assets so at least then if they are to be sold you can get good money for them.”
McGinn has been outstanding for Villa since signing from Hibernian in the summer of 2018 for a fee of just £3million.
He has made 81 appearances in all competitions for the Midlands giants and be a key goalscorer and creator from midfield, with 12 goals and 17 assists.
