Mills backs Mooy to dazzle at Celtic after transfer update

Danny Mills has backed Aaron Mooy to thrive at Celtic if he was to complete a move.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England full-back insisted the 30-year-old is still in his prime.

The Daily Record reported on 2 July Mooy is high on Ange Postecoglou’s transfer wishlist but he would have to take a significant pay cut to complete a move.

Mooy is currently playing for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port FC.

He made the move from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2020.

Postecoglou knows the midfielder well from his time in charge of the Australia national team.

Asked whether Mooy would do well for Celtic, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He possibly can, there’s no reason why he can’t.

“Players these days are looking after themselves. 30 is the new 28 with fitness regimes and the way they look after themselves. It’s vitally important.

“30 is no longer old. There was a point five years ago where a 30-year-old could only get a one-year rolling contract because of concerns over fitness and I don’t think that’s the case anymore.

“There’s plenty of people that have shown their fit enough and can do a good job at that age.

“There’s no reason why at 30-years-old you can’t thrive in the Scottish Premiership.”

Mooy played 96 times in the Premier League for Brighton and Huddersfield Town.

The 42-time Australia international scored nine goals and provided nine assists in England’s top-flight.

In other news, the winner has been named in Celtic’s race to sign a Premier League 28-year-old as terms are agreed.
