Mills: Bielsa tipped to seal 'unexpected' £20m+ Leeds signing after key reveal

Danny Mills has tipped Leeds United to seal a “left-field” signing as they eye a back up to Kalvin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender waxed lyrical about Phillips’ “exceptional” qualities and insisted it will be difficult for Leeds to find anybody like him.

Football Insider revealed this week that Leeds had made a new defensive midfielder one of their top priorities ahead of the summer window.

Director of football Victor Orta is compiling a shortlist of targets with the pedigree to provide cover and competition for Phillips.

“He’s a huge part of how they play and even when you go back to the Championship days I’d always say he’s the lynchpin who holds everything together,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“You take him out and there isn’t really another holding midfield player at the club that can do what he does with his passing, his set-piece delivery and his willingness to sit in front of the back four and protect.

“He’s exceptional and it takes a certain mentality to do that and not want to charge forward and try and score goals.

“From his perspective, he’s very influential in the way they play. Because they’re so high-pressing, so much on the front foot it makes it difficult when he’s not there.

“When he’s not there is often a huge chasm in that midfield and there’s nobody thinking defensively when other players are going forward.

“To sign someone else who can do the job it would be at least £20million. Unless Bielsa finds someone unexpected from left-field and we’ve seen him do that many times in that past.

“That would be huge, but it’s hard to be able to do that.”

In other news, Leeds United confident Bielsa’s top target can be signed for just £30million after early talks.
