Mills blown away by Aston Villa star Martinez after Sky reveal

Danny Mills has heaped praise on Emiliano Martinez after he equalled Brad Friedel’s record for Premier League clean sheets for Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the ex-England defender insisted the goalkeeper was one of the Premier League’s signings of the season.

Martinez kept his 15th clean sheet of the season against Everton on Thursday night – equalling Friedel’s club record for a Premier League campaign, as relayed by Sky Sports.

It is in stark contrast to last season when Villa used four different goalkeepers and had the second-worst defence in the league.

Martinez was brought in from Arsenal for a £20million fee in the summer to resolve the issue and has been a revelation at Villa Park.

“He’s been very, very good and he’s proven that he’s a good goalkeeper, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Without a doubt, he’s been Villa’s best singing but I’d argue Ruben Dias has had a bigger impact at Manchester City.

“It’s been a very, very good signing for Aston Villa. He’s been very stable in that goal all season long.

“Yes, he’s up there rightly so as one of the candidates for the signing of the season.”

Speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw with Everton, Dean Smith told Sky Sports: “We knew he would be important for us. He’s done really well.

“With Tom Heaton injured at the start of the season we needed someone. He’s made it his number one jersey.”

In other news, a senior star has rejected an Aston Villa contract offer and will join a Premier League rival.
