Mills delivers Man United title prediction after two new signings sealed

Danny Mills has suggested Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane will need to hit the ground running if Manchester United are to launch a serious title challenge this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Manchester City and England full-back insisted United have the players to win the title but consistency will be key.

The Reds got their season off to the best possible start at the weekend with a 5-1 thumping of bitter rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Man City lost to Tottenham 1-0 in north London.

Asked for his assessment of United’s title hopes, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild: “If they can get the consistency levels right they will be there or thereabouts.

“They’ve got the players. You just think over the last couple of seasons that they haven’t quite managed to do it.

“They’ve got to hope that Varane and Sancho can take them to that next level. City losing on the opening day helps. Chelsea look like they’ll be very strong and you’ve got Liverpool also.

“It’s going to be more competitive for the top four than it was last season.

“They’ve got the players to challenge, they need to keep most of those players fit for the majority of the season and in good form. It’s about whether they can go to that next level. They’ll be in the top four but can they push and challenge for the title?

“It’s one game in, if you’re saying they’re serious title contenders then you can flip it and say City aren’t because they lost. That doesn’t seem right after what happened last season with City.

“It’s a great start to Manchester United, it’s a game you’d expect them to win against Leeds, in all honesty. There will be tougher challenges to come.”

In other news, an Everton player wanted by Manchester United has been told by the Premier League he’s free to open talks with a new club.
