Danny Mills has claimed out-of-favour Tottenham star Dele Alli is the “perfect” player for Jose Mourinho’s 4-3-3 system.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Leeds United and England full-back insisted the 24-year-old still has a future in north London after starting against Ludogrets in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Alli marked his first appearance for the Lilywhites in November with an assist in their 4-0 win.
His performance drew praise from Mourinho after the game who hailed his lack of selfishness in setting up Carlos Vinicius’ second goal.
Asked by Football Insider whether Alli can force his way back into Mourinho’s Premier League side, Mills said: “There’s definitely still a future for him at Spurs.
“You only have to look at what Tanguy Ndombele has done, last season it looked like Mourinho had hung him out to dry and that was it.
“Dele Alli has obviously hit a dip in form but if he rediscovers his mojo then he’s still a fantastic player.
“When you look at the way Tottenham play, Dele Alli is perfect for that number 10 role. You’ve got Son streaming forward on one side, Bergwijn or Gareth Bale on the other and Harry Kane who is happy to drop deep and then you’ve got Dele Alli in the 10 role who can run beyond Kane like he used to.
“That causes defenders all sorts of problems.
“If he can get his mojo back then Jose is a very good coach and if he has got a good player he will use him, no matter what.”
Alli has played just twice in the Premier League this term and has not made the matchday squad for their last five games.
