Mills issues bold O'Riley verdict and 'Celtic fans may see it as disrespectful'

Danny Mills has backed Matt O’Riley to hit the ground running at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England defender claimed O’Riley was not making a “huge” step up from MK Dons.

Celtic confirmed on Thursday (20 January) the 21-year-old had moved from the League One outfit and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal.

He had five goals and three assists from midfield in his last 12 games for MK Dons before making the switch to Glasgow.

Asked whether he could replicate that for the Hoops, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I’ve always said that if we’re honest, the Scottish Premiership is a mix of the Championship and League One.

“Celtic and Rangers are towards the playoffs in the Championship.

“It’s a step up for him but he’ll be playing against similar sorts of teams that he was at MK Dons.

“I honestly believe if he’s done it at the level, it’s not a huge leap to the Scottish Premiership.

“If you equate that to a similar level in the Championship you would think ‘Yes, he’ll be fine’. That’s where it sits.

“It’s like a move to a big Championship club who are chasing the play-offs. That’s the sort of level.

“Celtic and Rangers fans may see it as disrespectful but that’s a fact and that’s how it is.”

O’Riley, a former England youth international, ended his association with MK Dons with 10 goals and eight assists in 54 appearances.

He is a graduate of Fulham’s academy and played five times for the senior side before leaving for Stadium MK.
