Mills issues one-word verdict on Liverpool signing Martinelli after unexpected reveal
Danny Mills has insisted it is “unlikely” Liverpool will launch a move for Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and England full-back claimed Martinelli has a lot of potential but is not ready to take the step up to Liverpool.
As quoted by James Benge of CBS following his side’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final second leg last night (20 January), Jurgen Klopp – unprompted – hailed the Brazilian as an “outstanding player”.
The Reds boss previously labelled Martinelli as the “talent of the century” after another League Cup tie between the two sides back in October 2019.
The 20-year-old has four goals and two assists in his last eight Premier League games but was not on the scoresheet last night as Liverpool progressed to the final.
Asked whether he could see Klopp making a move for Martinelli following his comments, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Unlikely.”

He added: “Klopp wouldn’t come out and say it unprompted otherwise. That’s bad business.
“If Arsenal know they really want someone they will put the price up. To come out and mention it in the press…
“Look at all the other players that play in that position for Liverpool, they probably know they need to get the Mo Salah deal done.
“Martinelli has done well but it’s been in fits and starts. There’s a lot of potential there but he hasn’t done it consistently.
“I don’t see him going to Liverpool, certainly not in the next couple of seasons.”
