Danny Mills has hailed Serge Aurier for taking on board Jose Mourinho’s advice and the “huge respect” in turning around his Tottenham career.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the ex-England international claims both men deserve praise for the right-back’s transformation.
As revealed by Football Insider, Spurs are planning to offer a new contract to Aurier after a change of heart from Daniel Levy.
The Tottenham chairman was prepared to sell the right-back over the summer and agree terms with Spartak Moscow but is now willing to tie him down to avoid another contract saga in north London.
Mills has applauded Aurier for seeing off the challenge of summer signing Matt Docherty and spelt out why the manager deserves a big share of the credit.
“It’s an interesting one because you’ve got Docherty there as well,” Mills told Football Insider.
“Mourinho gets a lot of flack in the media and in a lot of quarters about his management and man-management style and about how abrasive he is.
“But if you buy into Mourinho’s way and you understand what he wants and you do what he wants and you start winning suddenly there’s a huge respect there and it works.
“We see Harry Kane playing a different role from what he was doing before.
“If you give Mourinho’s tactics a chance and you’re prepared to work hard, he’s a very good coach, tactically he’s superb.
“If you’re prepared to work hand and knuckle down and work with him, even if it’s a little bit different to what you’re used to.
“Buy into what he wants and you start to be successful, winning remedies pretty much anything.”
