Postecoglou 'can't say this publicly' but he's 'excited' behind the scenes at Celtic after confirmed news - Mills

Steven Gerrard’s sudden departure from Rangers will sharpen the focus of Celtic, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Gerrard’s ex-England teammate tipped Celtic to build up a lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership if Rangers do not act quickly.

Gerrard quit the Ibrox giants for Aston Villa earlier this week (11 November) after three-and-a-half years in charge.

He leaves the Gers four points clear of their Glasgow rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

As quoted by Sky Sports (November 11), Ange Postecoglou insisted he avoided thinking about Celtic’s neighbours and instead he was “laser-focused” on his own side.

But Mills has suggested that the Hoops boss will be privately buzzing that Rangers are set for major upheaval.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “They’ll be thinking ‘We’ve got a chance in the next three or four games. If they don’t sort this out, we’ve got an opportunity to build a gap.’

“He’s right in one sense, they can’t worry too much about what they’re doing.

“But there’ll be part of him, which he can’t say publicly, that is excited and thinks, ‘if we win all our games, they can be a little bit up and down. If we can build up a decent lead, it’s going to be very, very difficult for them to close that gap’.

“It might just sharpen their focus and say right ‘We really need to now keep going and tighten the thumbscrews’.”

A Rangers source told Football Insider (November 11) they have set their sights on John Terry and Ronald Koeman as they look to appoint a new manager.

Koeman is out of work after leaving Barcelona last month while Terry is looking for his first managerial job after leaving Dean Smith’s Aston Villa coaching staff over the summer.
