Mills stunned by Jones after 'bizarre and incredible' Man United update

Danny Mills has claimed it is “bizarre and incredible” Phil Jones is still a Man United player.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and Leeds United defender insisted Jones need to leave Man United to play regular football.

The 29-year-old made his first appearance in almost two years during United’s 1-0 loss to Wolves on Monday (3 January).

He told club media yesterday (8 January) it was “great” to feel like a footballer again.

Jones’ last appearance before the defeat to Wolves was the 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup third round during the 2019-20 campaign.

The former England international had missed almost two years of football with a knee injury but returned to Under-23 action in September of last year (2021).

“To be honest I have no idea how he’s still at the football club,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I know he’s had his injury problems but surely he would want to be getting away and playing.

“I just find it bizarre and incredible that he’s still there and hasn’t wanted to leave and go and play, even if that’s a loan deal somewhere.

“He clearly was once a fabulous player but we don’t know if he’s still a fabulous player because he hasn’t played much.

“He needs to play football, he’s not particularly old. Get out and play some football.”

Jones has now played 225 times across all competitions for Man United.

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed back in 2013 that he could become the club’s best-ever player.
