Steven Gerrard will stay at Rangers for at least another season, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Leeds United defender delivered his verdict after it was revealed Premier League club Aston Villa have a “strong interest” in Gerrard.

Football Insider revealed Villa Chief executive Christian Purslow is said to want to lure the 40-year-old to the Midlands.

Current boss Dean Smith’s future is far from secure in the medium and long-term despite their excellent campaign this season.

This site understands Villa’s billionaire owners hoped they would be able to secure a top-six finish this season before launching a bid to break into the top-four regularly.

They are currently 11th in the table, eight points behind sixth-place Liverpool after their 2-1 loss to the Reds at the weekend.

“I don’t think Dean Smith has done too much wrong this season,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“You’re going to have to find a reason to move him on first.

“Taking Steven Gerrard would be a gamble in the Premier League, that’s for sure.

“Steven Gerrard will probably have another year at Rangers, defend that title and have a go at the Champions League then go from there.”

Gerrard secured Rangers’ 55th title this season and is currently on course to lead them through an invincible campaign with four games to go.

They also reached the last 16 of the Europa League and face Celtic in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup this weekend.

In other news, Rangers have been tipped to offload a big earner and replace him with a youngster.
