Raphinha tipped to sign new Leeds contract on one condition after Hay update - Mills

Raphinha needs to sack his agent if a potential news Leeds United contract does not include a release clause, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender delivered his verdict after an update on the club’s negotiations with their star man.

Phil Hay of the Athletic reported on Wednesday (19 January) that talks are making “good progress” and could be completed before the end of the month.

The Brazilian’s current deal runs until the summer of 2024 after he penned a four-year contract when he moved from Rennes in October 2020.

Asked for his verdict on a new contract for Raphinha, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “If he doesn’t have a release clause he needs a new agent, I would suggest.

“That’s not being derogatory in any way, shape or form. The player has to look after himself on this occasion when he’s being courted by other clubs.

“If he signs a new deal and Leeds go down, is that in his best interest? No is the answer, simple as that.

“He’s got to do what’s right for him and do what’s best for him. If that includes a release clause if Leeds get relegated or a release clause if Leeds stay in the Premier League, it has to be in there.”

Raphinha has scored eight times and provided two assists in 19 Premier League games this term.

The 25-year-old’s 51 appearances across all competitions for the Yorkshire giants have yielded 14 goals and 11 assists.
