Liverpool should have sold Mo Salah a year ago amid his increasingly uncertain future at Anfield.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley who has exclusively told Football Insider that Liverpool may now regret not selling Salah last season.

Salah signed a new two-year contract at Liverpool in April, to tie him down to the club until 2027, amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

However, following Liverpool's 3-3 draw against Leeds, Salah hit out at manager Arne Slot in an explosive interview after being left on the bench for the third successive game.

Liverpool should 'cash in' on Mo Salah

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley thinks it is a "viable" option that Salah departs Liverpool for Saudi Arabia.

"I think the thing with Salah and I remember saying this, you know, a year or so ago when there was talk of him going to Saudi. I think that was a good time to cash in on him then, if I'm being honest," Plumley said.

"And, of course, he's, you know, he's had that dip. He's still a brilliant player, but they might be looking at it now going, you know, how many years have we got left of Mo Salah?

"And that is just a natural consequence of players getting older. So if there is a deal on the table again from Saudi, he's going to want it as well, of course, as we've seen with players.

"I think it's a viable option, but it was a viable option a year ago. It's, obviously, you know, they wanted to keep him, and the player wanted to stay. So there's a lot of factors in there as well."

Salah may have made final Liverpool appearance

Salah was left out of Liverpool's squad against Inter, as Slot's side recorded an important 1-0 win in the Champions League.

The 33-year-old will depart for the African Cup of Nations after Liverpool's match against Brighton in the Premier League this weekend.

Salah may have already made his last appearance for the club if he is not recalled to the squad for the clash against the Seagulls at Anfield.
