Garry Monk has admitted that Alex Mowatt is set to leave Leeds in the final days of the January transfer window – and expects his exit to herald a series of new signings.

The Leeds manager, speaking for the first time since it had been widely reported that Mowatt was close to agreeing a move to Barnsley, also revealed he is looking forward to new players arriving at Elland Road in the next few days.

Amid reports that the playmaker, 21, had agreed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Tykes, Monk said on Friday afternoon he “was told last night that it was pretty far down the line”, as quoted by the personal Twitter account of Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Lee Sobot.

In a hint that he is getting impatient at the failure of Leeds chiefs to push through any new signings, Monk revealed that the squad must be revamped before next Tuesday’s window cut-off.

“I can only assume that the players that the club have talked about will come through the door as soon as possible,” Monk said. “We need to strengthen so I am looking forward to those players coming through the door”.

Monk’s words not only suggest that he wants some transfer action but also that the new-look board need to live up to their promises to hand him new players as the club push for promotion.

The former Swansea manager has reiterated on multiple occasions this month that he wants attacking reinforcements, with a striker his priority.

Leeds have been strongly linked with West Ham forward Ashley Fletcher and Norwich winger Sergi Canos but have been unable to seal the deals.

Moreover, Leeds chiefs appear to have overridden Monk’s wish to keep his squad intact as the club push for a return to the Premier League after 13 years.

The manager had insisted that no first-team players would be sold this month but Mowatt, who has been a regular member of the matchday squad and has accumulated 20 appearances this season, is now heading out the exit door.

In other Leeds news, there has been a finale in a major deal after a £7million Leeds bid was tabled.
