Morten Hjulmand passes Man United trial with flying colours as impressive stats vs Arsenal emerge

Manchester United target Morten Hjulmand was hugely impressive for Sporting CP on Wednesday as they were narrowly knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal.

The Portuguese side went to the Emirates Stadium needing to score after Kai Havertz had given the Gunners the lead in Lisbon last week, but they could only manage a 0-0 draw.

Hjulmand is of interest to Man United this summer as they prepare for the departure of Casemiro, and the potential exit of Manuel Ugarte.

The 26-year-old has been frequently linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years, with his exploits in Portugal attracting attention.

Man United transfer chiefs may well view this summer as the optimal time for a move, with the Dane set to have just two years remaining on his contract.

Morten Hjulmand’s impressive stats vs Arsenal

Football Insider exclusively revealed this week that Hjulmand is pushing for a move to the Premier League this summer amid the interest from Man United.

The Denmark international joined Sporting from Lecce in 2023, and has been a key part of the Portuguese side’s success since.

The 26-year-old has made 137 appearances and has proven himself to be a reliable presence in the middle of the park.

Against Arsenal on Wednesday, Hjulmand looked composed and intelligent, constantly finding the right option amid an intense press.

The Premier League leaders looked to put the Dane under pressure from the start, with quick thinking and strong execution vital.

Hjulmand did lose the ball on occasion, but completed 94 per cent of his passes and even created a chance.

It was his defensive work that stood out, however. The Dane made four tackles, two blocks, four recoveries and won half of his duels on the night.

Should Man United scouts have been watching on, they would have come away convinced of the midfielder’s ability to perform in the Premier League.

Hjulmand’s tattoo suggests alternate move

It can only be assumed that, if given a choice of the Premier League’s top clubs, Hjulmand would have no trouble picking – and it would not be to Man United.

A quick glance at the Dane’s shoulder would reveal a tattoo of the Arsenal badge, the club he has been fond of since his childhood.

“My dad supported Arsenal and we watched games together when we were younger,” he once explained.

The Gunners do not appear ready to make a move for Hjulmand, but the likes of Man United will be well aware of where the midfielder’s heart is.
