Jose Mourinho could “upgrade” the Tottenham defence by signing Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa this summer, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Spurs and Villa right-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Villans’ 23-year-old is a level above the likes of Davinson Sanchez.
As reported by The Athletic‘s David Ornstein earlier this week, Konsa has been on Tottenham’s radar since the summer of 2019 and they are considering launching a summer raid.
Mourinho currently has the likes of Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez to call upon at centre-back and the Portuguese boss has rotated between his options all season.
Hutton has suggested the Spurs boss lacks faith in his current senior stars and insisted Konsa is exactly what the Tottenham defence have been missing.
Asked if he thought the Villa would be an upgrade on Sanchez and the current defenders, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Oh, 100 per cent, without a doubt, it wouldn’t be difficult.
“Spurs are frustrating at the moment, you’re watching against Chelsea and it was an absolutely shocking performance. Then everybody’s calling for them to open up and be more expansive which they did, to be fair, against West Brom and they got the victory.
“You just wonder if that’s why Jose Mourinho doesn’t play that way in the Premier League because he did it against Everton in the cup and you saw what happened.
“All the warning signs are there for me thinking that Jose Mourinho doesn’t trust these defensive players and that’s why he plays in the manner that he does.
“Of course someone like Konsa would be an upgrade because he’s a fantastic defender, he likes to defend, he likes to get his body in the way and I think that’s what Tottenham are missing.”
