Graeme Murty claims that Rangers is still a huge draw as a club after being inundated with calls from agents since he took over the manager job.
He claims that the quality of players he is being offered is high and that he is still keen to strengthen in the January transfer window if the right deal comes along.
Talking to the Scottish Sun, Murty refused to be drawn on names, although the newspaper claims that Steven Naismith, Russell Martin, Jason Cummings and Greg Docherty are all linked.
“We are working hard behind the scenes on a number of things,” Murty said.
“But the thing I wasn’t prepared for was just how many people recognise the size of this club.
“We all know how big it is to play here. But you forget the regard it is held in around England, around Europe and here in America because some of the people phoning up are high level.
“I am not sure that business is finished… Plans have been in place for a while in terms of strengthening certain areas and if the right personnel becomes available we have to be quick enough to make sure we can secure them.”
The report also claims that ‘flops’ such as Brunoa Alves, Dalcio and Fabio Cardoso could leave, but that Murty wants to hold onto other players such as James Tavernier and Josh Windass.
Football Insider verdict:
Despite its recent fall from grace Rangers is still a huge club and there are lots of high-level players that would be excited at the prospect of playing in front of a packed Ibrox crowd. The big issue for Murty is getting the right players in given Rangers’ financial position. He has confirmed that he still wants to strengthen his side and that could be key if he wants to close the gap between Rangers and Celtic before the end of the season. A tilt at the title is probably too much to expect, but as long as progress is being made the fans will be happy and Murty will have a chance of staying in charge beyond the end of the season.
