Tanguy Ndombele is set to become Tottenham's record signing after agreeing a five-year contract and a salary package worth £52million, Football Insider understands.

Spurs have reached a verbal agreement on a fee with Lyon for Ndombele of £55million plus add-ons taking the transfer to a potential £65million.

A Tottenham source with knowledge of the club's recruitment has told Football Insider that the central midfielder will be catapulted into the top bracket of earners with a £175,000-a-week salary topped up by a £6million signing-on fee.

The package, worth £200,000-a-week, on top of the club-record transfer fee, smashing the current lead-figure of £42million spent on Davinson Sanchez, will be regarded as a huge statement of ambition from Tottenham.

The club did not buy any players in the previous two transfer windows and their last recruit was the £25million capture of Lucas Moura in January of last year.

Ndombele is a six-times France international who has been extensively scouted by Tottenham in the last two seasons after initially impressing at Lyon during a season-long loan from Amiens.

He took his game to a new level last season as he was a key player for his side not only in Ligue 1 as they finished third in the table, but also in the Champions League.

Spurs' scouts were impressed with Ndombele's athletic and dominant displays in Champions League group stages clashes against Manchester City, one of which was drawn and the other won.

He made 49 appearances in all competitions for Lyon last season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists.
