Noel Whelan has claimed Celtic will look to sell Leigh Griffiths this summer with the imminent arrival of Albian Ajeti at Parkhead.
The former Leeds United and Aberdeen forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said Neil Lennon has lost his trust in the Griffiths, 29, and will make Ajeti his second-choice striker this season.
Sky Sports reported that the Hoops have agreed a loan deal with West Ham for the player which includes an option-to-buy for £5million at the end of the season.
Griffiths scored 11 goals in 31 appearances for the Hoops last season but reported back for pre-season training unfit and out of shape.
Whelan is adamant that the club will look to move on the former Scotland international.
“I think Neil is done with Leigh now,” he told Football Insider.
“Once you lose your trust in a player – that is it.
“He was the second choice last year and the player Neil went to. It does not seem like that is the case now. I think his time has come.
“If they could get him out of the club this summer I think they would.
“It seems to me that they want to put their trust in somebody else and with Ajeti, that is what they have done. That is the best way to show a player that you cannot go and do what you have done.”
After Sunday’s 2-0 friendly win against Ross County, Lennon said: “I gave him a bit of criticism while I was away.
“He’s got himself in great condition. It’s a great boost. It’s the minimum requirement.”
