'Never going to be the answer' - Pundit urges Aston Villa transfer as he tears into senior star

Noel Whelan says that Aston Villa need to dip into the transfer market and sign a striker after Wesley Moraes’ form this season.

The former Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the Brazilian is not the Villans’ answer to getting the goals needed to keep them in the Premier League.

Wesley scored just his fifth top-flight goal of the season on New Year’s Day, firing home the opener in a 2-1 win over Burnley before being stretchered off with an injury.

Whelan insists that the 23-year-old is not the man to fire Villa to safety and says the club should be looking at bringing in another centre-forward to help boost their chances of survival.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Aston Villa, they haven’t got that striker, Wesley was never going to be the answer for 20 goals in the Premier League, I knew that straight away. I said it at the beginning of the season, he’s not going to be your answer to that.

“When you get to this period of the year, you know what you’re fighting for and it’s going to be survival for them. I think they need a goalscorer, someone who can stick the ball in the back of the net.

“I don’t think they’ve ever recovered from losing Tammy Abraham, who I did say would do better at Chelsea than he did at Aston Villa. Wesley’s not your answer unfortunately, maybe that’s where they should be looking.”

Wednesday’s victory means that Dean Smith’s men start 2020 outside the relegation zone, having lost five of their last six league games prior to the win at Burnley.

In other Aston Villa news, Alan Hutton claims that the club could secure a “great signing” as they are linked with a red-hot forward.
