New Liverpool signing 'just like Kane' tipped to replace senior star 'out of his depth' - pundit
Paddy Kenny has tipped Liverpool to try and sign a new right-back after James Milner’s “pummelling” against Manchester City.
However, the former Premier League goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Reds may struggle to convince anyone to come in as backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
With the academy product injured, Milner, 35, stepped in at right-back for the 2-2 draw with City prior to the international break.
However, the veteran utility man was tormented by City ace Phil Foden before being substituted off.
Liverpool’s only other recognised right-back is 20-year-old Neco Williams, although he has struggled for game time.
Kenny insisted Liverpool need quality competition for Alexander-Arnold and suggested the Reds would be looking for new signings.

However, he compared the current stalwart’s status to that of Harry Kane at Tottenham and suggested players would not want to join as backup.
Asked if he thought Liverpool need another natural right-back option, Kenny told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I’m sure it’s something they’re looking into.
“It’s a difficult one isn’t it? Just like Harry Kane, what do you do? He’s someone guaranteed a starting spot. Someone who comes in knows they’re going to be a number two right-back.
“Which player wants to do that who is good enough to fill his boots?
“It’s a tough one to think about, isn’t it? These big teams playing in these big competitions need competition for all positions. They need a big squad.
“I’ll be surprised if they don’t strengthen that area, especially after what happened the other week. Milner did look out of his depth a little bit at right-back. He got a bit of a pummeling to be fair.”
