Brentford are close to beating Rangers, Celtic and multiple English clubs to the signing of Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney, Football Insider can reveal.
The west London club are in talks with the League One outfit over a deal worth between £8-9million.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that a fee for Toney is close to being agreed although add-ons will comprise a “significant” sum.
Brentford have submitted a new bid after falling short with a £5m move for the 24-year-old last month.
The Londoners are aiming to bounce back from their play-off final heartache with the 24-year-old as their spearhead.
They have all but accepted defeat in their bid to keep star striker Ollie Watkins, who is wanted by multiple top-flight clubs including Aston Villa and Leeds United after his 26-goal 2019-20 campaign.
Toney’s suitors this window have included not only Rangers and Celtic, but Bournemouth, West Brom, Fulham and the New York Red Bulls.
Celtic had a bid worth up to £3m rejected while Rangers monitored him closely before signing Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten on four-year deals.
Toney has made up his mind to quit London Road after a stunning 26-goal campaign.
Toney was on fire before the March lockdown, netting 24 league goals – nine more than anyone else – among 26 in all competitions this season.
Since signing from Newcastle United in 2018, the front man has netted 49 goals in 94 matches as well as supplied 15 assists.
