Newcastle 25-year-old confirms switch to Premier League giants

By Will Butcher

Christian Atsu has returned to parent club Chelsea after starring in Newcastle’s promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The 25-year-old was an integral member of Rafa Benitez’s side throughout the 2016-17 campaign, and could still return to St. James’ Park on a permanent basis.

Football site ESPN FC claim sources close to the Ghana international have the option to complete a £6.5million permanent move for Atsu after completing his season-long loan.

Ahead of the summer window, Atsu revealed on his Instagram story that he had returned to Stamford Bridge by posting a video of himself and Baba Rahman in Chelsea’s physio room.

It is believed that a move must be completed within one week of the season finishing, leaving manager Rafa Benitez with four days left to complete the signing of Atsu.

Wearing the number 30 shirt for Newcastle, Atsu scored five goals from the left flank in his 35 league and cup appearances for Benitez’s side.

Atsu has just 12 months to run on his current deal at Stamford Bridge, after failing to earn any kind of first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge since his move from Porto in 2013.

The speed machine has spent time on loan with five different clubs during his stay with Chelsea, with the Toon on a long list that also includes Vitesse Arnhem, Malaga, Everton and Bournemouth.

It remains to be seen if Atsu will rejoin Benitez’s side, who is set to be busy in the transfer window this summer.

In other Newcastle transfer news, this £17million speed machine is on the Toon’s radar after Atsu’s recommendation.
