Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino on loan, according to a report.
Spanish newspaper Marca claim on their website that the Magpies will see the 21-year-old join on a year’s loan as the German giants look to secure first team football for the defensive midfielder.
Merino, who joined Dortmund from Spanish side Osasuna last summer, is an Under-21 international for Spain, having made seven appearances for his country since his debut in September 2016.
He was a regular fixture for Osasuna in the second tier of Spanish football, making 67 appearances across all competitions, although he has had to settle for a fringe role at the Signal Iduna Park, with just nine outings to his name so far for Dortmund.
Football Insider verdict
Newcastle really should be looking to secure transfers that will benefit them in the long term, but one or two short term arrivals should at least help secure their Premier League safety during the upcoming season. With the gulf of talent at Dortmund, Merino’s opportunities look limited, and so a loan move seems sensible. Whether or not he has the ability to succeed in England’s top flight is another matter, with just eight appearances in any of Europe’s top leagues, in his case the Bundesliga. Still, a young talent who is hungry to prove himself could be a real asset to Newcastle’s squad, and if Newcastle are smart enough, they might be able to persuade Dortmund into selling him on at a later date.
