Newcastle backed to complete marquee James Maddison signing after source's reveal - pundit

Frank McAvennie has backed Newcastle United to spend big and secure James Maddison this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Maddison will “cost a lot of money” but is certain Newcastle will meet the demands of Leicester City.

The Magpies attempted to land the 26-year-old last summer after tabling offers of over £40million which were knocked back by Leicester.

His current deal expires in 2024 but talks over a new contract at the King Power Stadium have stalled.

Last week (14 March), Football Insider revealed that Eddie Howe has made it clear to sporting director Dan Ashworth that he has identified the playmaker as one of his two top summer targets along with Arsenal star Kieran Tierney.

The boss has requested that the north-east side focus their efforts on getting a deal for Maddison over the line in the summer.

Leicester are hoping for a bidding war for their prize asset who is attracting interest from other Premier League clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham.

When asked if a deal for Maddison is likely in the summer, McAvennie told Football Insider:They have got the money to get him.

“I think Maddison is a great player. He makes Leicester tick, it is as clear as day.

When he is not in the team they are not the same. That for me shows that he is the talent that everyone thinks he is.

“It will cost a lot of money but they have got that kind of money to go and spend.
