Newcastle backed to ignite 'new era' with 'marquee' Wijnaldum signing - pundit

Georginio Wijnaldum could be the “marquee signing” to kickstart the new era at Newcastle, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 31-year-old could join the Tyneside club if offered mega-money in January.

According to 90min (9 December), Wijnaldum’s representatives have contacted several Premier League clubs about a potential loan move in January after failing to establish himself at Paris Saint-Germain.

The report claims Newcastle are interested, with Everton, Arsenal, West Ham, Leicester and Aston Villa also mentioned.

Wijnaldum joined the Magpies in 2015, spending one season at the club before departing for Liverpool in a reported £25million deal.

When asked if Newcastle could tempt Wijnaldum, Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Well, giving him another £100,000 a week would probably do the job.

“That might be one of the ways that he could end up going back to Newcastle – but he’ll need convincing.

“Arsenal have got that better chance of winning trophies. But, of course, money talks – let’s not beat around the bush. .

“Wijnaldum could be that marquee signing that kickstarts the new era at Newcastle. I can see the deal happening.”

The 85-cap Netherlands international has managed just seven league starts this term.

As revealed by Football Insider last month (23 November), Newcastle are targeting loan signings in the winter window.

The Magpies will want to add new faces to help stave off the threat of relegation.

The Tyneside club sit 19th in the Premier League after 15 games.
