Benitez reveals Newcastle transfer plans, hopes to spring surprise

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that he intends to target Premier League experience this summer, although he admits that could come at a cost – and might even be impossible.
The Magpies earned promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and go into the final day of the season still with a chance of securing the league title.
With promotion secured, the Newcastle manager has opened up about his transfer targets and how he intends to integrate them into his squad.
Benitez focused on bringing in proven Premier League and Championship talent last summer in order to secure a top two finish and although he says this is his aim once again, prices may force him to look elsewhere.
“The ideal situation is to bring in some experience,” the former Liverpool manager told the Chronicle.

“But at the same time you have to analyse the prices. They are sometimes impossible.
“Sometimes players from abroad are a little bit cheaper, but they can be better players.”
This news will be music to Newcastle owner Mike Ashley’s ears, with the business tycoon infamous for securing value for money when it comes to the football club.
For this reason the club have often imported from markets such as France and Holland, to mixed results.
Benitez puts the failure of the foreign signings down to a lack of mental resolve, and insists any overseas purchases will be analysed to make sure they have the character to succeed.
He told the Chronicle: “The main thing will be to make sure, if you bring in players from abroad, that they are mentally strong enough and with the personality to go with the intensity of the Premier League.”
Benitez also claimed that he might be able to spring a surprise or two in the transfer window, but admitted that players would have to leave in order make room for incoming signings.
He said: “Some players they are not stupid and they know: ‘Maybe it’s my last chance.
“Sometimes you can find a player that you don’t expect that you can sign because the circumstances are right.”
