Newcastle could complete 'incredible' Stefan de Vrij signing after £15m update - pundit

Newcastle United should go all out to sign Inter Milan star Stefan de Vrij this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s future.

As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday (3 May), Inter Milan have told De Vrij, 30, he can leave for £15million this summer as he heads into the final year of his contract.

That has opened the door to De Vrij’s Premier League suitors, who include Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Kenny is backing the Magpies to pull off the signing thanks to the project at St James’ Park.

“You are talking about a top-quality defender who has seen it all,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Newcastle could do with some of that. Look at Kieran Trippier. I know he has only played a few games but his influence can’t be overstated.

“You are paying £15million for a defender of his quality, it’s an absolute no brainer for me.

“Other clubs will be interested but obviously Newcastle can blow their competition out of the water with wages.

“They can do that if they need to. Maybe De Vrij can be convinced by the project.

“He will have seen Newcastle’s rise under Eddie Howe and he might want to be a part of that.

“If he was available I would go all out to get him. He would be an incredible capture.”

De Vrij has made 37 appearances for Inter this season.

Newcastle bolstered their defence with the signings of Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett.
