Newcastle could seal Ginola-like signing in January after 'huge' report - pundit
Newcastle United’s new owners can make “a huge statement” with the signing of Phillipe Coutinho in January, according to Kevin Phillips.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the Brazilian 29-year-old’s arrival would evoke memories of David Ginola and Faustino Asprilla on Tyneside.
According to Spanish outlet SPORT (October 8th), the ex-Liverpool star is one of the names being targeted ahead of the January transfer window.
It is reported that emissaries of the Saudi Public Investment Fund were in contact with Coutinho’s representatives over the summer.
Barcelona would more than likely welcome the interest from Newcastle, given their financial problems and Coutinho’s high wages.
When asked by Football Insider‘s for his assessment of the report, Phillips said: “I think we could see him at Newcastle, if the owners are to be ambitious from the off.

“What a coup that would be. He is a player of great stature.
“We have seen quality players at Newcastle over the years. Flair players like David Ginola and Asprilla. Coutinho is of that mould. Newcastle fans want to see those type of players come back to their football club. He would excite the fans.
“Coutinho has struggled at Barcelona but we saw at Liverpool what a top player he can be. You don’t lose that overnight.
“It would be a huge statement if they can get him. He would also attract other big name players to the club.”
