The shot stopper has kept an impressive 10 clean sheets in 33 appearances across all competitions and captained his side.

The Clarets are currently 14th-placed in the Premier League table and seven points above the drop zone with just three games remaining.

Sean Dyche’s side were expected to face the drop this season, but the form of goalkeeper Heaton has been one of the key reasons that they have steered clear of a relegation battle.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle currently have Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot as their goalkeeping options ahead of next season, with the former showing signs that he could cut the grade in the top-flight. However, signing a recognised Premier League performer would be smart by Benitez and Heaton certainly ticks all the boxes. He has been one of the best in the division this year and is a brilliant shot stopper. Heaton has now made two senior caps for England as a reward for his performances and could bring some extra quality to the Newcastle squad. The 31-year-old is at a peak of his career and the £15million reported fee seems a fair amount. Benitez would be wise to use part of his summer transfer bank in securing his services.
