Newcastle eye January raid for goal-a-game forward firing his side to top-flight title - report
Newcastle United are eyeing up a January swoop for Red Star Belgrade forward Richmond Boakye, according to a report.
ESPN claims that West Brom are also in the hunt for Boakye, 24, as they, like Newcastle, have struggled for goals in the Premier League this season.
It is understood that Rafa Benitez wants to strengthen his striker options in the January transfer window and has his sights set on the Ghana international, who has averaged better than one goal-per-game in the Serbia top-flight this term.
The forward has netted 14 times in 13 appearances in the SuperLiga, firing Red Star towards the league title as they currently sit nine points clear at the top of the table.
Newcastle are pretty short of quality up front with Joselu, Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic there only options.
However Mitrovic is widely linked with a move away from St James’ Park over his lack of game time while Gayle and Joselu have struggled to find a consistent goal scoring rhythm.

Football Insider Verdict
Boakye is certainly in fine form with Red Star but his stats in the Europa League group stages perhaps gives a huge clue about how he can play against better opposition. Against Arsenal, BATE and Cologne, Boakye managed just one goal which came against the German side. It’s all well and good scoring against domestic teams in Serbia, but his goal scoring record against bigger sides show that he isn’t good enough for Premier League football. Red Star probably don’t want to lose him either as he is helping them to win the league title this year, so it’s unlikely to be a cheap buy. There must be better targets out there for Newcastle and West Brom to pursue.
