Report: Newcastle eye swoop for La Liga shot stoppers - one is giants' international star

By Russell Edge

Newcastle United have identified both Real Sociedad’s Geronimo Rulli and Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen as transfer targets for the January transfer window, according to a report.

Spanish football news website El Gol Digital claim that the Magpies are keen on securing a deal for 25-year-old goalkeeper Rulli, who is said to be expected to depart in the summer transfer window if Newcastle do not swoop in during the winter market.

However the report states that Barcelona’s second choice shot stopper Jasper Cillessen, who is a 36-time-capped Dutch international, is also on their list of targets, as they look to offer him the first team football he is missing at the Nou Camp.

He has just one appearance for the Catalan giants this season, appearing on the bench in every other match, while Rulli is first choice at Sociedad, with 15 outings under his belt for the La Liga side.

Securing a goalkeeper seemed to be of paramount importance to Rafael Benitez over the summer and it appears that nothing will change come the winter window, despite having four contracted to the club already. The arrival of another over January is likely to spell the end of Karl Darlow’s time on Tyneside, while Rob Elliot should not consider himself safe either, despite being the current first choice. Matz Sels is out on loan at Anderlecht but he does not seem to have any future under Rafael Benitez, leaving the inexperienced Freddie Woodman, who may well depart on loan upon the arrival of another shot stopper, as the only goalkeeper who seems certain to stay at Newcastle. Cillessen would certainly seem an improvement over the current options, while Rulli is highly rated and reportedly pursued by several clubs.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are looking to reignite a swoop for a former target after failing with a £20million bid.
